Caitríona Balfe is set to headline the new Apple TV+ horror thriller Ascension, directed by Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón.
Variety reports that the series has received a green light from the streamer, marking a significant milestone for a project Cuarón has been developing for several years. News of the series first surfaced in 2017, when Casey Affleck was initially attached to star. The role has since gone to Balfe.
The official logline describes the story as centering on “a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother, brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own. When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings – until she discovers something far more insidious beneath.”
Ascension is an adaptation of Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days.
