Netflix is adding several major stars to the voice cast of its upcoming animated film Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, with Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet and Helena Bonham Carter joining the project.

The new additions will join previously announced stars Kit Connor, who voices Charlie Paley, and Taika Waititi, who voices Willy Wonka.

Produced by Netflix Animation Studios, Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory is scheduled to open in theaters worldwide on November 5, 2027, before arriving on Netflix on December 22. Sony Pictures Entertainment will oversee international theatrical distribution.

The film will receive a 47-day theatrical window, marking another significant commitment to cinemas from Netflix. The streamer recently announced a similar theatrical run for La Bola Negra, while its upcoming Narnia film is set for a 49-day theatrical window. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos had previously indicated that the company was prepared to commit to a six-week theatrical window for major releases.

In Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, Wonka has spent years behind bars after the infamous Golden Ticket contest, following an incident in which a child was turned into a blueberry. After serving his sentence, he returns to his factory hoping to bring some sweetness back to a world that has become increasingly bitter.

Standing in his way is Charlie Paley and his group of friends. Facing eviction from their homes, the so-called “rotten” kids devise a risky plan to break into Wonka’s factory, steal a priceless Wonka Bar and save their homes. However, once inside, they quickly discover that the magical world of the factory is far more dangerous and unpredictable than they could have imagined.

The film is directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, with Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo producing. Waititi is attached as an executive producer.

Netflix has also confirmed that the film will feature original songs, new characters and several familiar faces as it expands the world created by author Roald Dahl.

The project is also moving beyond the big screen through a pair of major licensing partnerships. Ferrero Group will introduce a Wonka-themed range featuring 10 seasonal and limited-edition products spanning chocolate, sugar confectionery, ice cream and cereal. The products are expected to launch in the United States and selected European markets, including the UK, France, Italy and Germany.

Meanwhile, Moose Toys has been named the film’s master toy partner. Its Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory toy collection is scheduled to hit stores in 2027 ahead of the movie’s theatrical release.

With an all-star voice cast, new music, original characters and an expanded theatrical rollout, Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory is shaping up to be one of Netflix Animation’s major global releases for 2027.
