Julia Garner is officially returning to Netflix, and this time she’s joining forces with Anthony Boyle to bring one of the biggest financial scandals in recent history to the screen.
The Altruists, an eight-episode limited crime series chronicling the meteoric rise and spectacular collapse of FTX, has officially been announced by Netflix. The series is set to premiere globally on November 19.
For readers who have been following our coverage here at What’s on Netflix, The Altruists has been in development for quite some time. We first revealed in May 2025 that Netflix was developing a series centered on Sam Bankman-Fried. We later shared exclusive details about the project, including its development as a limited crime series, along with photos from the production.
Netflix has now officially unveiled the series, releasing the first-look images exclusively through Tudum and confirming the full cast set to portray the real-life figures at the center of the scandal. The series will explore the complicated relationship between Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, who were described as “Gen Z’s own Bonnie & Clyde.”
Inspired by extensive reporting from Kevin T. Dugan and Jen Wieczner for New York Magazine, The Altruists will delve into the fast-moving world of cryptocurrency and the rise of two young executives whose ambitions ultimately became tied to an $8 billion fraud.
Netflix describes the series with the following official logline:
“The story of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, two hyper-smart, ambitious young idealists who tried to remake the global financial system in the blink of an eye – before they were accused of stealing $8 billion and became Gen Z’s own Bonnie & Clyde.”
The series is being led by creator, writer, and showrunner Graham Moore, who won an Academy Award for his screenplay for The Imitation Game. Jacqueline Hoyt, known for her work on The Underground Railroad and The Leftovers, serves as co-showrunner and writer.
With Garner and Boyle leading the cast, The Altruists is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s more closely watched true-crime dramas, particularly given the extraordinary rise and collapse of FTX and the real-life figures at the heart of the story.
The Altruists premieres globally on Netflix on November 19.
