Michael Showalter is set to direct a contemporary reimagining of the beloved romantic comedy Serendipity for Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax, according to reports.

Marc Klein, who wrote the screenplay for the original 2001 film, is returning to pen the new project, with casting currently underway.

Showalter will produce the film alongside Jordana Mollick through their Semi-Formal Productions banner, which has a multi-year, first-look film deal with Amazon MGM. Simon Fields, who produced the original Serendipity, is also on board as a producer. Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy and Thom Zadra will executive produce for Miramax alongside Klein. Emily Crook is overseeing the project for Semi-Formal, while Arianna D’Andrea is overseeing it for Miramax.

The original Serendipity, directed by Peter Chelsom and starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, followed two strangers who meet and fall for each other during a magical Christmas night in New York City. Although both are engaged to other people, they struggle to ignore their connection. After going their separate ways, they leave the possibility of a future together to fate. Seven years later, both begin searching for each other.

Details about the format and release strategy for the new version have not yet been revealed, including whether it will receive a theatrical release or debut on streaming.

Showalter emphasized that the new film will not simply recreate the original story. In a statement, he described it as something closer to a “rebuttal,” featuring new characters, a new storyline and fresh ideas about love and relationships while retaining the spirit of the original.

The project also marks another collaboration between Showalter and Amazon MGM, as well as his latest venture into the romantic-comedy genre. Over the past decade, the filmmaker has built a strong track record in romance-driven films.
