Kate Winslet is set to lead The Unheard, a new five-episode thriller series coming to Netflix. The limited series is written by Jack Thorne, the acclaimed screenwriter behind Netflix’s hit drama Adolescence, marking another collaboration between Thorne and the streaming platform.
Directed by Mounia Akl, The Unheard follows two sisters who are forced to go on the run after a revenge plot takes an unexpected turn. Production is expected to begin in 2027, although Netflix has yet to announce an official release date.
The series was unveiled as part of Netflix’s new U.K. slate at the Edinburgh TV Festival. Its official logline teases a story centered on the sisters’ desperate escape and the events that drove them to take such drastic action: “This limited series tells the story of two sisters who go on the run after an act of vengeance goes wrong.”
Netflix has not revealed many additional details about the plot. However, the thriller is expected to explore the sisters’ relationship, their motivations, and the consequences of the decision that forces them into hiding. As they are pursued, the series will also raise questions about whether their actions were planned and whether they ever intended to escape the consequences.
Winslet will star alongside Maxine Peake, with the pair portraying the two sisters at the center of the story. The two are currently the only confirmed cast members.
For Winslet, The Unheard adds another dramatic television role to an already impressive lineup. She previously won an Emmy for her performance in HBO’s Mare of Easttown and has also appeared in recent series including The Regime and I Am Ruth. Peake is known for her work in Shameless, Anne, Say Nothing, and Black Mirror.
Behind the scenes, Akl will direct while Thorne serves as the writer. The series will be produced by Warp Films, Matriarch Productions, and Plan B. Winslet and Thorne will executive produce alongside Stephen Graham, Hannah Walters, Mark Herbert, Emily Feller, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Nina Wolarsky.
With production not expected to begin until 2027, Netflix is likely to reveal more casting announcements and story details in the coming months. For now, The Unheard is shaping up to be another high-profile British thriller, bringing together Winslet, Peake, Akl, and Thorne for a story of revenge, sisterhood, and survival.
