Amazon MGM Studios is bringing a twisted new murder mystery to Prime Video, with Penn Badgley set to lead the cast of Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone, an upcoming dark comedy based on Benjamin Stevenson’s bestselling novel.
Prime Video has officially ordered the series, with David Hemingson serving as showrunner and executive producer. Hemingson is best known for writing The Holdovers, the acclaimed 2023 Christmas drama that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
The series will follow Ern Cunningham, played by Badgley, a mystery-writing expert who travels to Vermont to reunite with his family and welcome his brother, Michael, home from prison. Ern’s connection to Michael is complicated, however, as he was the person who helped put his brother behind bars.
Things take a much darker turn when a frozen body is discovered and a powerful snowstorm leaves the family trapped together. As more deaths begin to pile up, Ern is forced to confront an unsettling truth: every member of his family has killed someone, whether intentionally or by accident.
Badgley is a natural fit for the role, having gained widespread recognition for his performance as Joe Goldberg in Netflix’s hit psychological thriller You. The actor has also appeared in films including The Stepfather (2009) and Margin Call (2011).
For Hemingson, the series marks another opportunity to blend dark humor with emotionally driven storytelling. Throughout his career, he has written for popular television series such as How I Met Your Mother, Black-ish, and Family Guy, before earning major recognition for The Holdovers.
“I’m thrilled to be partnered with Fifth Season and Made Up Stories in bringing Ben’s heartfelt and darkly hilarious whodunit to life,” Hemingson said in a statement.
He also praised Badgley’s casting, saying the actor was perfectly suited to portray Ern’s unique personality.
“And we are so lucky to have Penn as our lead,” Hemingson added. “I can’t think of any actor better suited to bring Ern’s intensity, brilliance and hilariously dry sense of humor to life”.
