Fans of Stephen King’s darker supernatural stories have a new adaptation to look forward to. King’s eerie Lovecraftian horror tale “Crouch End” is officially being developed as a six-episode limited series for Prime Video.
Titled Crouch End, the upcoming series is based on King’s short story of the same name. Paul Tomalin is attached as creator and writer, while Tom Shankland will direct the series. Production is expected to take place on location in London, adding an authentic atmosphere to the unsettling story.
The series follows global movie star Doris Freeman, who arrives at a London police station claiming that strange and inexplicable forces are connected to her husband’s disappearance. Police Inspector Ted Vetter is tasked with uncovering the truth, but his investigation quickly raises disturbing questions. Is Doris telling the truth? Could she have murdered her husband? Or is something far more sinister lurking beneath the surface?
Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios executive Nicole Clemens shared her excitement about bringing the story to the screen.
“Stephen King is one of the defining storytellers of our time,” Clemens said, describing Crouch End as a Lovecraftian tale that combines a visceral crime thriller with a supernatural mystery.
King’s original Crouch End story first appeared in the 1980 anthology New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos. A slightly revised version was later published in his 1993 collection Nightmares & Dreamscapes. Set in the real-life North London district of Crouch End, the story blends ordinary London surroundings with nightmarish supernatural elements inspired by the cosmic horror tradition of H.P. Lovecraft.
Director Tom Shankland brings previous experience in crime and thriller television to the project. He directed the 2021 British crime drama The Serpent and is also attached to the upcoming Apple TV+ thriller Berlin Noir, based on Philip Kerr’s novels.
Shankland, a longtime Stephen King fan, said the opportunity to adapt the author’s London-set mystery was particularly exciting. He described Crouch End as a project that aims to be cinematic, original and thought-provoking.
The six-part limited series will be produced by Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season. Paul Tomalin, Tom Shankland, Damien Timmer, Rebecca Keane and Ben Irving are serving as executive producers for Prime Video.
With King’s signature supernatural horror, a mysterious disappearance and a distinctly London setting, Crouch End could offer fans a chilling new take on one of the author’s lesser-known stories.
