Oscar winner Amy Madigan is stepping back onto the baseball diamond, joining Tom Hanks and Callum Turner in Sony Pictures’ upcoming film The Comebacker.
The film, directed by Marielle Heller, is shaping up to be an intriguing new addition to the baseball movie genre, bringing together an impressive ensemble for a story described as a love letter to the sport. Madigan’s casting comes after her recent Oscar win for her acclaimed performance in Weapons.
Based on a short story by acclaimed author Dave Eggers, The Comebacker centres on a young New York Mets pitcher, played by Turner, whose life is dramatically altered after he is struck by a batted ball during a game.
Hanks stars as the pitcher’s coach, while Patricia Clarkson has already joined the cast as the coach’s wife. Madigan will portray the owner of the team, adding another major presence to an already star-studded lineup.
Heller has adapted Eggers’ story for the screen herself, marking another collaboration with Hanks following their work together on the acclaimed 2019 drama A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. The director is also known for films including The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Nightbitch.
For Madigan, the project also carries an amusing connection to her past. The actress previously appeared in the beloved 1989 baseball classic Field of Dreams, making The Comebacker something of a return to familiar territory. Her recent Oscar victory for Weapons has also put her back in the spotlight, making her addition to the film particularly exciting.
Behind the camera, Hanks is also involved as a producer alongside Gary Goetzman through Playtone, with Heller and Leah Holzer producing for Defiant By Nature. The production is being developed in cooperation with Major League Baseball and the New York Mets, with filming expected to take place around New York, including Queens and Citi Field.
Sony has scheduled The Comebacker for release on July 30, 2027, giving audiences another year to wait before this new baseball story reaches cinemas.
With Hanks returning to the baseball genre, Madigan revisiting familiar territory and Heller bringing Eggers’ story to the big screen, The Comebacker is already shaping up as one of Sony’s more intriguing upcoming dramas.
