Jason Momoa and Adria Arjona are teaming up on the big screen once again, this time for the upcoming crime thriller Copperhead, which is building an impressive ensemble around star Miles Teller.
The pair have joined the cast alongside Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Tenoch Huerta and veteran actor Kiefer Sutherland. They will appear opposite Teller in the new thriller from filmmaker John Swab, although details surrounding their individual characters are currently being kept under wraps.
Copperhead will centre on a dangerous undercover drug operation that spirals into violence. In the aftermath, a veteran detective is forced to work alongside a young federal agent as the pair attempt to uncover a conspiracy operating within their own elite task force.
The screenplay comes from Chad Feehan and J. Todd Scott, with Swab directing. The filmmaker previously earned attention for King Ivory, which helped establish him as a rising voice in gritty crime cinema.
The addition of Momoa, Arjona, Huerta and Sutherland significantly expands what was already an intriguing project led by Teller. With the characters yet to be revealed, the casting announcement leaves plenty of mystery surrounding who can be trusted once the investigation begins.
For Momoa and Arjona, Copperhead also marks another collaboration between the real-life couple. The two previously appeared together in the 2021 Netflix thriller Sweet Girl, in which they played husband and wife. Their professional relationship has since continued alongside their real-life relationship.
Momoa is currently enjoying one of the busiest periods of his career. Following his recent appearance as Lobo in Supergirl, the actor has several major projects ahead, including Street Fighter, Dune: Part Three and Fast Forever.
Arjona is similarly building an increasingly diverse filmography. Following appearances in projects including Andor and Splitsville, she has A24’s Onslaught among her upcoming releases, as well as The Thomas Crown Affair and James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow.
Huerta, meanwhile, is best known internationally for portraying Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a role he is expected to reprise in Avengers: Doomsday. Sutherland remains best known for his iconic portrayal of Jack Bauer in 24, while continuing to take on film and television projects.
Production on Copperhead is scheduled to begin in September, with Oklahoma serving as a key filming location. The project is being financed and produced by Black Label Media alongside Teller’s Lime Tree Productions and Swab’s Milk Boy.
The film is also heading to the Toronto International Film Festival’s market, where Black Bear will begin presenting the project to international buyers.
With Teller leading the cast and Momoa, Arjona, Huerta and Sutherland now on board, Copperhead is shaping up as a potentially explosive crime thriller. While audiences will have to wait for further details about the characters and release plans, the combination of talent behind the camera and in front of it makes this one worth keeping an eye on.
