Tyler Perry is returning to Netflix with a new drama that looks set to explore some of his most familiar themes: resilience, redemption and the possibility of finding hope in unexpected places.
The first trailer for Tyler Perry’s Doing Life has arrived, introducing Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves as two people whose lives become intertwined after a chance encounter under extraordinary circumstances.
Written, directed and produced by Perry, the film is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix on October 2, 2026.
At the centre of the story is Anika, played by Baker, a single mother who is doing everything she can to provide for her family. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she reconnects with Carousel, portrayed by Reeves, a former prisoner attempting to rebuild his life after serving his sentence.
The trailer initially takes viewers back to the moment the pair first crossed paths. Anika was pregnant and working as a corrections officer when a violent prison riot erupted. During the chaos, Carousel intervened and helped protect Anika and her unborn child.
Years later, Carousel is released from prison, bringing the two back into each other’s lives. What begins as a renewed connection gradually develops into something much deeper.
Their relationship isn’t without obstacles, however. Anika’s family remains sceptical of Carousel, while both characters must confront the complicated histories and circumstances that have shaped their lives.
The trailer promises an emotional mixture of romance and drama as Anika and Carousel discover that their shared experiences may give them a unique understanding of one another.
Perry has described the film as being inspired by people he has encountered throughout his own life, particularly formerly incarcerated individuals trying to find another path and single mothers determined to give their children a better future.
That inspiration appears to be at the heart of Doing Life, with the film placing its focus on people who have experienced difficult circumstances but refuse to allow their past to define their future.
Alongside Baker and Reeves, the cast includes Tamberla Perry, Karen Obilom, Jasmine Sargent, Lucky Johnson and Danielle Moné Truitt. Perry is also producing the movie alongside Tony L. Strickland and Angi Bones.
Doing Life continues Perry’s expanding relationship with Netflix, following previous projects including A Fall from Grace, A Jazzman’s Blues, Mea Culpa, The Six Triple Eight and Straw.
With its focus on love, family, survival and second chances, Doing Life looks to deliver another emotionally charged story from one of Hollywood’s most prolific filmmakers.
