Netflix has unveiled a new teaser trailer and key art for La Bola Negra, the highly anticipated Spanish-language drama starring Oscar winners Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close.
The film comes from acclaimed Spanish filmmaking duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, better known collectively as “Los Javis,” and arrives with considerable momentum following its acclaimed world premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The directors were awarded the Best Director prize at Cannes, while the film also competed for the festival’s prestigious Palme d’Or.
La Bola Negra is an ambitious story spanning generations, exploring the complicated relationship between love, desire, sexuality, memory and inherited trauma. The narrative follows three gay men whose lives are connected across different periods of Spanish history, moving between the 1930s and 2017.
The newly released footage offers a glimpse at the emotional scale of the film, with scenes depicting passion, conflict, loss and the consequences of living through periods in which identity and sexuality could carry devastating consequences.
At the centre of the story are characters portrayed by Milo Quifes, Guitarricadelafuente and Carlos González. The ensemble also features Miguel Bernardeau, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Antonio de la Torre, Cruz and Close. Spanish musician Guitarricadelafuente also makes his acting debut with the film.
The film takes its title from La bola negra, an unfinished play by legendary Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca. The project also draws inspiration from Alberto Conejero’s play La piedra oscura, giving the film a strong connection to Spain’s artistic and cultural history.
Rather than presenting its characters’ experiences as isolated stories, La Bola Negra appears to use its multiple timelines to examine how love, repression and trauma can echo from one generation into another.
That historical perspective gives the film an especially poignant backdrop, with parts of the story set against the Spanish Civil War before eventually moving into contemporary Spain. The result looks to be an expansive drama that combines intimate personal stories with a much larger examination of Spanish history and LGBTQ+ identity.
For Cruz and Close, the film adds another major prestige project to an already busy period in their respective careers. Close is also set to appear in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, while Cruz has several projects on the horizon, including the psychological thriller Bunker.
Following its festival success, La Bola Negra is now heading towards its theatrical release in the United States. The film will open in U.S. cinemas on October 16, 2026, before arriving on Netflix in the U.S. and Canada on December 2.
With its Cannes recognition, celebrated creative team and impressive international cast, La Bola Negra is shaping up as one of the more intriguing prestige dramas of the 2026 movie calendar.
