Inde Navarrette is adding another intriguing project to her rapidly expanding film career, with the Obsession star set to headline Apple Original Films’ upcoming sci-fi thriller The Waffle House Index.
The project has been acquired by Apple, with Plan B Entertainment attached to produce and Louis Paxton on board to direct. Andrew Nunnelly wrote the screenplay, which earned a spot on the 2025 Black List, a respected annual selection highlighting some of Hollywood’s most promising unproduced screenplays.
Navarrette will take on the lead role while also serving as an executive producer on the movie.
Although Apple and the filmmakers are keeping much of the story under wraps, the screenplay’s premise offers a particularly unusual spin on the title. The story follows Jane, a woman working the overnight shift at a Waffle House as a major storm approaches.
What begins as an ordinary night on the job quickly spirals into something far more dangerous. According to the reported logline, Jane finds herself dealing with an armed stranger as the situation outside deteriorates, with catastrophic events including severe flooding and other increasingly bizarre threats.
The movie takes its title from the real-world “Waffle House Index,” an informal measure associated with FEMA that can be used to gauge the severity of a natural disaster. Because Waffle House restaurants are famously known for remaining open during extreme weather when possible, their operating status can provide an indication of how severely an area has been affected.
That unusual concept appears to provide the foundation for what could be an unconventional blend of disaster thriller and science fiction.
For Navarrette, the project arrives during a major period of career momentum. She previously starred as Sarah Cushing in Superman & Lois and has continued building her film résumé with projects including Obsession and Trap House.
She has also recently landed the high-profile role of Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men movie, making The Waffle House Index another significant addition to her increasingly busy slate.
With Plan B behind the production, Paxton directing and a Black List screenplay at its center, The Waffle House Index certainly stands out as one of the more unusual projects currently in development at Apple Original Films.
A release date, production schedule and additional cast members have yet to be announced.
