Universal Pictures is developing an English-language remake of the South Korean thriller Confession of Murder, with Glen Powell attached to produce and Chris MacBride set to write the screenplay.
The project will revisit the story told in the 2012 Korean film, which centres on a notorious killer who seemingly disappears after a string of murders. Years later, a man suddenly comes forward claiming responsibility for the crimes, turning himself into a public sensation and throwing the investigation into fresh turmoil.
While the original film mixed elements of crime, mystery and action, the new Universal version will bring the premise to an English-speaking audience with a fresh creative approach.
MacBride is writing the remake, adding the project to a growing list of genre titles associated with the filmmaker. His previous work includes writing the screenplay for the psychological thriller The Gift and collaborating on other high-concept genre projects.
Powell will produce through his production company, continuing the actor and filmmaker’s increasingly active role behind the camera. Following the success of projects such as Anyone But You and Twisters, Powell has been expanding his producing slate alongside his acting career.
The original Confession of Murder was directed by Jung Byung-gil and starred Jung Jae-young and Park Si-hoo. The film became known for its unconventional combination of serial-killer mystery, action and dark humour, providing plenty of potential for a Hollywood reinterpretation.
Universal has not yet announced a director or cast for the remake, and details surrounding its production schedule remain under wraps.
