Amy Ryan, known for her work in Birdman, is set to star opposite Emilia Jones in The Retrievals, Netflix’s upcoming series from Maid and Sirens creator and executive producer Molly Smith Metzler.
Inspired by Susan Burton’s Peabody Award-winning New York Times podcast, The Retrievals tells the shocking true story of a group of IVF patients who unite in a legal battle against Yale University after undergoing egg-retrieval procedures without proper anesthesia. The patients were unknowingly affected after a nurse stole fentanyl and replaced the medication with saline.
Ryan will portray Carla Russo, a veteran nurse at the Yale Fertility Center who pleaded guilty to diverting large quantities of fentanyl and diluting it with saline. Her actions left numerous patients to endure painful egg-retrieval procedures without adequate anesthesia.
Jones will play Gabby Clemente, one of Russo’s victims, who goes on to spearhead a landmark legal battle against Yale University.
Metzler serves as writer and showrunner on the series. She will executive produce through her Quiet Coyote banner alongside Maid and Sirens collaborators Colin McKenna and LuckyChap. LuckyChap’s Dani Gorin, Tom Ackerley, and Margot Robbie will also executive produce.
Additional executive producers include Caitlin Roper for The New York Times and podcast creator Susan Burton.
