There is something wonderfully nostalgic about seeing the Looney Tunes characters back on the big screen, and Coyote vs. Acme proves that these iconic creations still have plenty of life left in them. Rather than simply recreating the classic Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner formula, the film cleverly expands their world into a surprisingly entertaining courtroom comedy filled with slapstick chaos, clever jokes and plenty of heart.
The premise is simple. After years of being blown up, flattened, launched into the air and generally humiliated by defective ACME products, Wile E. Coyote finally decides that enough is enough. With the help of lawyer Kevin Avery (Will Forte), he takes ACME Corporation to court, putting the company responsible for his endless suffering on trial.
It is a terrific setup because it takes one of the most familiar running jokes in cartoon history and asks a very simple question: What if Wile E. Coyote actually fought back?
Director Dave Green strikes an enjoyable balance between the absurdity of the Looney Tunes universe and the more grounded world of live-action filmmaking. The combination of animated characters and human performers works particularly well, allowing the film to feel like more than an extended cartoon gag. There is a genuine story underneath all the mayhem, and surprisingly, Coyote vs. Acme manages to give Wile E. Coyote an emotional journey.
Will Forte is perfectly suited to the film’s eccentric tone, bringing plenty of energy and comedic timing to Kevin Avery. Lana Condor adds warmth to the human side of the story, while John Cena clearly understands the assignment as ACME’s slick and overly confident representative.
But the real star remains Wile E. Coyote himself. His expressive animation and wonderfully exaggerated reactions capture the spirit of the original cartoons without simply copying them. Watching him finally stand up to ACME gives the character an unexpected sense of purpose, while his long-running rivalry with the Road Runner remains at the heart of the film.
The movie also understands the importance of nostalgia. Familiar Looney Tunes characters appear throughout the story, but their appearances generally feel purposeful rather than being simple cameos thrown in to make audiences cheer. Fans who grew up with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn and company should have plenty to enjoy.
Most importantly, Coyote vs. Acme is fun. It embraces the ridiculousness of its premise instead of trying to make the material unnecessarily serious. The visual gags, physical comedy and escalating ACME disasters provide plenty of laughs, while the underlying story gives the film enough emotional weight to make you care about what happens.
After all the real-world drama surrounding its journey to audiences, there is something particularly satisfying about finally seeing Coyote vs. Acme get its moment. It feels like a film that was made because somebody genuinely loves these characters.
Coyote vs. Acme may not reinvent the Looney Tunes, but it doesn’t need to. It delivers a funny, affectionate and surprisingly heartfelt adventure that respects the characters while giving them a fresh new story. For longtime fans, it’s a welcome trip back to a world where anvils fall from the sky, physics is optional and Wile E. Coyote simply refuses to give up.
