Stephen Curry’s extraordinary basketball career is heading to the big screen, with Disney unveiling a new trailer and poster for the upcoming ESPN Films documentary Portrait of an Artist: Stephen Curry.
Directed by Gotham Chopra, the feature-length documentary takes a different approach to the traditional sports documentary, exploring Curry not simply as one of basketball’s greatest players, but as an artist whose creativity and vision have fundamentally changed the game.
The film follows Curry around the period of his historic 4,000th career three-pointer, a milestone that made him the first player in NBA history to reach the mark. Curry achieved the feat during the Golden State Warriors’ home game against the Sacramento Kings at Chase Center on March 13, 2025, needing just two three-pointers entering the game. The Warriors ultimately won 130–104.
The new trailer gives audiences a glimpse at the man behind the record-breaking numbers, touching on Curry’s upbringing, his relationship with basketball and the mindset that has allowed him to continually redefine what is possible on the court.
“For me it’s never just been a game,” Curry says in the trailer. “It’s always felt more like an art.”
That idea forms the heart of the documentary, which draws parallels between Curry’s approach to basketball and the creative processes of artists from completely different disciplines.
Among those appearing in the film are Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis, legendary producer Rick Rubin, acclaimed singer-songwriter Patti Smith and Grammy-winning musician Jon Batiste. Their perspectives help examine Curry’s unique approach to his craft and the wider cultural impact of his career.
Adding another layer to the experience, Portrait of an Artist: Stephen Curry was filmed using 21 IMAX-certified cameras, capturing the intensity surrounding the historic game and placing audiences directly inside one of the most significant moments of Curry’s career.
The documentary is produced and presented by IMAX, Religion of Sports and Unanimous Media, in association with NBA Entertainment, with Disney handling distribution.
