KJ Apa and Nadia Parkes are teaming up for a new horror movie, with the pair set to headline Obey, an upcoming feature being developed by Waypoint Entertainment and Spooky Pictures.
Sony’s Screen Gems has secured distribution for the project, which will be directed by Sophie Kargman, the filmmaker behind the genre-bending thriller Susie Searches. The screenplay comes from Ryan Farhoudi, while plot details are currently being kept firmly under wraps.
Apa is best known for playing Archie Andrews in Riverdale, and has recently expanded into a variety of film and television projects. He starred opposite Madelyn Cline in Prime Video’s romantic drama The Map That Leads to You and is set to portray legendary actor James Stewart in the upcoming biopic Jimmy, which is scheduled to hit cinemas in November.
The actor also has several projects on the horizon, including the Netflix series Myron Bolitar and the holiday horror movie White Elephant.
Parkes has also been building an increasingly diverse screen résumé. Earlier this year, she appeared opposite Spike Fearn in Finding Emily and recently led the BBC series Kidnapped: The Chloe Ayling Story. She also stars alongside Taron Egerton in the dark comedy Everybody Wants to Fck Me*, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Parkes will next appear in Sharon Horgan’s HBO series Youth, which is scheduled to premiere on September 20.
Behind the camera, Obey brings together an experienced group of genre producers. Ken Kao, Josh Rosenbaum and Emily Cheung are producing for Waypoint Entertainment’s Cweature Features, while Steven Schneider, Roy Lee and Simmy Wolf are producing for Spooky Pictures. Alex Lebovici is attached as an executive producer.
The project also marks another collaboration between Waypoint Entertainment and Spooky Pictures following Hokum, the Damian McCarthy horror film released by Neon earlier this year.
While there is currently no word on the film’s storyline, production schedule or release date, the combination of Apa and Parkes in the leading roles, Kargman behind the camera and Screen Gems handling distribution makes Obey one to keep an eye on as more details emerge.
For now, audiences will have to wait to discover exactly what Obey has in store.
