Chris Evans finds himself caught in an increasingly bizarre hostage situation in the first trailer for Sacrifice, the upcoming darkly comic thriller from filmmaker Romain Gavras.
Evans stars as Mike Tyler, a movie star attempting to revive his career while attending an extravagant environmental charity gala hosted by billionaire Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel) and his wife, Gloria (Salma Hayek Pinault). What initially appears to be another glamorous celebrity event quickly descends into chaos when Joan (Anya Taylor-Joy), the leader of a radical group, storms the gathering with her followers.
Joan takes several guests hostage, including Mike, as part of a bizarre plan involving an impending global catastrophe. According to her beliefs, three people must be sacrificed to a nearby volcano to prevent an extinction-level event.
The trailer sets up a deliberately outrageous clash between celebrity culture, wealth, activism and belief, with Mike suddenly forced to confront a situation far removed from the carefully controlled world of Hollywood.
Sacrifice uses its increasingly surreal premise to explore themes surrounding celebrity culture, media spectacle, performative activism and the behaviour of wealthy elites, while also examining questions of faith, conviction and the search for meaning.
The film is directed by Romain Gavras, best known for Athena, and marks his English-language feature debut. Gavras co-wrote the screenplay with Will Arbery, whose credits include Succession.
Evans leads an eclectic ensemble that also features Taylor-Joy, Cassel, Hayek Pinault, Sam Richardson, John Malkovich, Ambika Mod, Yung Lean, Jade Croot, Miriam Silverman and Charli XCX.
The film also marks an intriguing collaboration between Gavras and several music-world names, with Charli XCX appearing as Mother Nature and Yung Lean taking on the role of Arthur.
Having premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, Sacrifice is now preparing for its Netflix release. The film is scheduled to arrive on the streaming service on October 16, 2026.
With Evans playing a celebrity pushed far outside his comfort zone and Taylor-Joy embracing a radical figure determined to carry out an extraordinary plan, Sacrifice looks set to deliver a strange and provocative mix of dark comedy, satire and thriller elements.
