Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Who Is Martin Mull?, a new documentary celebrating the extraordinary life and career of the late Martin Mull, with comedy legend Steve Martin among those reflecting on the entertainer’s remarkable legacy.
Directed by Neil Berkeley and the late Bob Saget, the documentary explores the many sides of Mull’s career, from his beginnings as a musician and satirical performer to his success as an actor, comedian and acclaimed painter. The film promises an intimate look at an artist who continually reinvented himself throughout his life.
The trailer highlights Mull’s journey across several decades of entertainment, including his work on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Fernwood 2 Night, Roseanne, Clue and Arrested Development. He also became a familiar face through numerous television appearances, while maintaining a serious career as a visual artist.
Steve Martin, Tom Waits and David Alan Grier are among the familiar faces appearing in the documentary, offering their personal memories and perspectives on Mull and the impact he had on the comedy world. The film also features archival material and interviews with Mull himself, allowing him to tell much of his story in his own words.
Patton Oswalt also appears in the trailer, reflecting on Mull’s extensive television career, while footage featuring the late Fred Willard further underlines the close-knit comedy community surrounding the project.
Rather than focusing solely on Mull’s best-known acting roles, Who Is Martin Mull? looks at the breadth of his creativity. His career moved effortlessly between music, comedy, television, film and painting, making him one of entertainment’s more unconventional and difficult-to-categorise performers.
Mull passed away in June 2024 at the age of 80. The documentary therefore arrives as both a celebration of his career and an opportunity to introduce his work to audiences who may know his face without necessarily knowing the full story behind it.
Who Is Martin Mull? is part of Netflix’s upcoming collection of comedy documentaries arriving throughout October. The film will begin streaming globally on October 7, 2026.
