Netflix has released the first trailer for SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of, a new documentary celebrating the groundbreaking Canadian sketch-comedy series and the performers, characters, and sketches that made it a comedy institution.
The documentary brings together several of SCTV’s most recognizable cast members for interviews and a reunion, including Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, and Martin Short. The late Joe Flaherty also appears in the film. Netflix describes the documentary as a funny and heartfelt exploration of how the modest Canadian series went on to make a lasting mark on comedy.
Originally airing from 1976 to 1984, SCTV became known for its talented ensemble cast, memorable recurring characters, and distinctive sketches. The series also served as a launching pad for performers who would go on to become major stars in film and television.
The documentary has roots in an SCTV reunion filmed in Toronto in 2018. Martin Scorsese was initially attached to the project, while Jimmy Kimmel served as moderator for the reunion. Netflix later developed the material into the documentary, with Jason Hehir directing.
The newly released trailer revisits some of SCTV’s most recognizable characters and sketches, including Edith Prickley, Earl Camembert, Johnny LaRue, Jerry Todd, the Five Neat Guys, High School High-Q, and the Half-Wits. It also recalls some of the show’s familiar comedic bits, including the “Swedish meatball” joke and a memorable line about wanting to “see people blow up in films.”
One of the documentary’s themes is how SCTV built its audience despite receiving little promotion or advertising in its early days. Rather than relying on a major marketing campaign, the series found viewers largely through word of mouth.
The trailer also highlights the performers’ enduring connection to the show and the influence SCTV has had on generations of comedy. According to Netflix, the documentary features rare archival footage and previously untold stories from the series’ history.
Footage from the 2018 Toronto reunion is also incorporated into the film, bringing surviving cast members together to reflect on their experiences and revisit the comedy that helped define their careers.
