A new generation of teenage friendship, first love and complicated emotions takes centre stage in Extra Geography, with the official trailer and poster now released ahead of the film’s October cinema debut.
Directed by Molly Manners and adapted from Rose Tremain’s short story by Miriam Battye, Extra Geography is set within the world of an English girls’ boarding school. The coming-of-age film follows best friends Flic and Minna as they navigate academic pressure, friendship, romance and the often-confusing experience of growing up.
The film stars Marni Duggan and Galaxie Clear as Flic and Minna, with Alice Englert also appearing as their geography teacher, Miss Delavigne.
At the centre of the story is an unusual summer project. Flic and Minna, both high-achieving students with ambitions for their futures, decide that they are going to fall in love. What initially begins as something of an academic experiment soon becomes far more complicated when the girls choose their geography teacher as the target of their romantic pursuit.
Their carefully constructed plan begins to unravel when the girls become involved in their school’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, performed in collaboration with a boys’ school.
As boys enter their previously self-contained world, Flic and Minna are forced to confront feelings and experiences that they cannot control. What began as a game increasingly blurs the line between experimentation and genuine emotion, placing their friendship under pressure.
The film explores the intensity of teenage relationships and the way friendships formed during adolescence can have a lasting impact. Alongside its humour, Extra Geography looks at themes including sexuality, independence, shame, control, repression and the difficulties of understanding emotions before having the experience or language to properly articulate them.
For Manners, the story offered an opportunity to explore female friendship through an intensely teenage perspective.
The filmmaker was drawn to Tremain’s original short story before becoming attached to Battye’s screenplay, describing the material as a story that could examine the emotional extremes of adolescence while also celebrating the formative nature of early female friendships.
Manners also drew upon her own experiences of attending an all-girls school when developing the film, using that perspective to explore the complex relationships and emotions that shape the characters.
Casting was particularly important to the director, with Duggan and Clear ultimately taking on the roles of Flic and Minna. According to Manners, the pair brought an immediate chemistry and distinctive dynamic to the friendship at the centre of the film, while Englert was chosen to portray Miss Delavigne.
The film also incorporates A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a thematic parallel to the girls’ own experiments with love, adding another layer of comedy, mythology and chaos to their increasingly complicated summer.
Extra Geography is ultimately positioned as both a funny and intimate portrait of teenage girlhood, examining the friendships, ambitions and romantic experiences that can feel all-consuming during adolescence.
With its combination of coming-of-age comedy, romance and drama, the film looks set to explore how confusing — and sometimes exhilarating — those first experiences of love and independence can be.
Extra Geography will be released in cinemas on October 2, 2026.
