Charlie Sheen and his father, Martin Sheen, are teaming up on screen once again, returning to their familiar roles as father and son for the first time in more than a decade.
The father-son duo will headline Happy Jack, a new half-hour comedy series ordered by AMC and AMC+. The network has given the series a six-episode order, with production set to take place at Warner Bros. Studios, the iconic home of shows including Friends. The series is expected to premiere in 2027.
Created by Jim Patterson and Matt Ross, who previously worked together on series including Two and a Half Men and The Ranch, Happy Jack will see the pair serve as writers, executive producers and showrunners. The series is being produced by AMC Studios.
The project represents a notable move for AMC, which has traditionally focused more heavily on dramas and has had a limited presence in the traditional half-hour comedy space. The network has previously aired shows such as Kevin Can F*ck Himself and Lucky Hank, though both blended comedy with darker dramatic elements.
In Happy Jack, Charlie Sheen plays Jack, a lifelong underachiever who has never quite managed to get his life together. Despite his shortcomings, Jack is the father of two successful daughters — something his own father, played by Martin Sheen, believes deserves some credit.
Jack’s daughter Kate runs his company and often serves as the person responsible for keeping him on track. His other daughter, Sam, is more impulsive and shares many of her father’s free-spirited qualities.
Everything changes when Sam returns home to introduce her family to her new boyfriend, Paul, a former investment banker who has reinvented himself as a van-life guru. Jack is stunned to discover that Paul is the same age as he is.
Although Jack initially struggles with the revelation, the situation forces him to confront a larger question: whether he will continue putting himself first or finally embrace an opportunity to become a bigger part of his daughters’ lives.
Charlie and Martin Sheen have shared the screen as father and son several times over the years. Their most recent collaboration came on the FX sitcom Anger Management, which premiered in 2012. They are perhaps best known for playing father and son in the 1987 film Wall Street, in which Martin Sheen portrayed Carl Fox and Charlie Sheen starred as Bud Fox.
Charlie Sheen will also executive produce the new series alongside Todd Christopher, Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum and Jason Wang, with 20th Television also attached as an executive producer.
Speaking about the project, Charlie Sheen said the timing felt right for his return to television.
“I’ve always heard the moments that truly matter happen when they’re supposed to. The good folks at AMC have played a huge hand in deciding that moment is now.”
Sheen added that he was excited to return to television with a project he considers meaningful, saying, “It’s no secret that it’s been a minute, and I’m thrilled to be going back on television in such a meaningful way in an equally wonderful show.”
He also teased the reunion of the creative team behind the series, concluding: “The crew has reassembled – suffice it to say, it’s time to give the people what they want.”
