Netflix has unveiled an emotional official trailer for The One About Matthew Perry, an upcoming three-part documentary series celebrating the life, career and legacy of the late Friends star Matthew Perry. Offering an intimate look at the beloved actor beyond his iconic portrayal of Chandler Bing, the series promises to explore both his extraordinary success and the personal struggles he faced throughout his life.
Arriving on Netflix on October 27, 2026, the documentary will feature never-before-seen photographs and videos from Perry’s family archives, alongside heartfelt interviews with those who knew him best. Through personal stories and previously unreleased material, the series aims to reveal a more complete picture of the actor behind one of television’s most recognisable characters.
The newly released trailer begins with a nostalgic collection of Perry’s memorable performances, including highlights from Friends, before shifting to more personal moments from his life. Among the footage is an interview in which Perry discusses his lifelong ambition of becoming famous.
As the trailer progresses, the focus turns to the challenges Perry experienced away from the spotlight. His sister, Mia Perry Bowick, speaks candidly about his struggles with addiction and loneliness, reflecting on how achieving international fame did not necessarily bring him the happiness he had hoped for.
The documentary will feature interviews with several people who shared close relationships with Perry, including his sister, best friend Roger Castillo, actor David Pressman, former NBC Entertainment president Warren Littlefield, René Ashton and Kevin Pollak. Their recollections will offer different perspectives on the actor’s life, career and enduring impact.
Speaking about the project, Bowick explained that it took time for her to feel ready to share her memories of her brother and the complexities of his life.
She hopes the documentary will allow audiences to see Perry as more than Chandler Bing or someone who struggled with addiction, highlighting his generous spirit, sense of humour and the profound influence he had on those around him.
Directed by Mary Robertson, The One About Matthew Perry is a three-part documentary produced by Maxine Productions, with Jessica Call serving as a producer. Robertson also serves as an executive producer alongside Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman, with Lora Moftah as co-executive producer.
Robertson described Perry as one of the great comedic talents of his generation, whose performances brought laughter and connection to millions of viewers. She also highlighted his willingness to speak openly about addiction, explaining that the documentary was created to give those closest to him an opportunity to share the person behind his public image.
Perry’s career spanned more than four decades, beginning with his television debut in 240-Robert in 1979. He went on to appear in numerous television shows and films, including Growing Pains, Fools Rush In, The Whole Nine Yards, 17 Again and Numb.
However, it was his portrayal of Chandler Bing in the hugely successful sitcom Friends that cemented his place in television history. Appearing throughout all ten seasons of the series, Perry became a household name, with his distinctive comedic timing and sarcastic humour helping make Chandler one of the show’s most beloved characters.
Despite his professional success, Perry faced a lengthy battle with addiction, something he discussed publicly throughout his life. His death in October 2023, aged 54, was ruled an accidental overdose.
With previously unseen footage and deeply personal accounts from his family, friends and colleagues, The One About Matthew Perry will offer audiences an opportunity to revisit the actor’s remarkable career while discovering more about the man behind the laughter.
