On October 3rd, Lindsay Lohan Told Us What Day It Was, and the Internet Lost It

Get in, loser. It’s October 3rd. Lindsay Lohan marked Mean Girls Day on Saturday by recreating the movie’s most quoted calendar moment, and she brought along a scene partner nobody saw coming: Mean Girls director Mark Waters.

The clip, posted Saturday morning to Lohan’s TikTok, Instagram and X with the caption “It’s October 3rd,” finds her back in Cady Heron mode. Out comes the classic voiceover, “On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was,” followed by the line that launched a thousand memes, “It’s October 3rd,” delivered with the same wide-eyed delight as 2004. Then comes a wink, and Lohan and Waters crack up.

Fans did not stay calm. The video has racked up more than 4 million views on TikTok and more than 2 million on X, and its Instagram likes sailed past 1.4 million and kept climbing, hitting roughly 2 million at last check.

Even the original Aaron Samuels showed up. Jonathan Bennett hopped into the Instagram comments with: “This made me miss you two so much!” He also celebrated on his own feed, asking fans, “How many people can I get to answer me for Mean Girls Day?”

Why October 3rd Became a Holiday

Quick refresher for anyone who’s been living in the African bush: in the Tina Fey-penned 2004 comedy, Lohan plays Cady, a formerly homeschooled teen who lands at a high school ruled by the Plastics, played by Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried. In one dreamy classroom moment, her crush Aaron turns around from the desk in front of her and asks for the date. Cady’s swoony answer turned Oct. 3 into an unofficial holiday that the internet celebrates every single year.

Lohan has joined in before, posting stills from the scene on past Oct. 3rds. But putting the man who directed the original moment in the frame? That’s so fetch. (Yes, we’re trying to make it happen.)

Lohan and Waters Are Back in Business

The reunion isn’t just for nostalgia. Lohan and Waters, who also made 2003’s Freaky Friday together, are teaming up again for Return to You, a Netflix romance starring Lohan and Henry Golding. Waters directs from a script by Eric Champnella, and Lohan also produces.

Set in 2008, the film follows a powerful but lonely attorney (Lohan) who mistakenly receives a deeply emotional DVD a dying woman made for her husband (Golding). With only the clues on that disc, she sets out to find him. Ego Nwodim, Randall Park and Victor Garber also star. Production kicked off in late September, and Netflix hasn’t set a release date yet.

Until then, we’ll be over here rewatching the clip on loop. On Wednesdays we wear pink, and on October 3rd, we let Lindsay Lohan tell us what day it is.
