Production has officially wrapped on Twilight of the Dead, the long-awaited final chapter in legendary filmmaker George A. Romero’s iconic zombie saga.
The horror film stars Underworld actress Kate Beckinsale alongside Get Out star Betty Gabriel, newcomer Abigail London, Kurt Deimer, Phil Burke, Cooper Barnes, Tait Fletcher and John D. Hickman.
Filmed in Kentucky, production concluded last month. Special effects were handled by Greg Nicotero, the acclaimed makeup effects artist and director best known for his work on The Walking Dead. Nicotero also previously collaborated with Romero on Day of the Dead.
Set on a devastated Earth, Twilight of the Dead follows the final remnants of humanity as they struggle to survive between warring factions while facing an increasingly dangerous undead threat. The film is directed by brothers Doron and Yoav Paz, whose previous credits include The Golem and Plan A.
The project has the backing of the Romero estate, with Bob Yari’s Magenta Light Studios holding North American rights. The company plans to release the film theatrically across the United States and Canada, while The Syndicate is handling international sales.
Romero developed the story for Twilight of the Dead before his death in 2017 and envisioned it as the conclusion to his groundbreaking zombie saga. His franchise spanned six films, along with numerous spin-offs and remakes, with the most recent installment arriving in 2009.
Twilight of the Dead was first announced in 2021, and the filmmakers have previously suggested that the door could remain open for further stories set in a new zombie franchise if the upcoming film proves successful.
For fans of Romero’s original vision, Twilight of the Dead represents both an ending and a potential new beginning for one of horror cinema’s most influential worlds.
