Michael Jackson knew how to captivate millions, and his unforgettable performance at the 1993 Super Bowl remains one of the most iconic moments in entertainment history. Now, the story behind the King of Pop’s groundbreaking halftime show is set to be explored in a new documentary.

Hulu and ESPN announced Tuesday that Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl will premiere in February on the streaming platform and cable network. The documentary will revisit Jackson’s historic performance at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how the show came together and the lasting impact it had on pop culture.

Featuring never-before-seen footage of Jackson and his team, the film will explore the planning, preparation and execution of the performance, as well as its role in transforming the Super Bowl halftime show into one of the biggest entertainment events in the world.

Before Jackson took the stage, the NFL had featured popular acts such as New Kids on the Block in 1991 and Gloria Estefan in 1992. However, the league faced a major challenge when Fox aired a special episode of In Living Color during Estefan’s halftime performance, reportedly drawing approximately 22 million viewers away from the game.

Determined to reclaim the audience’s attention, the NFL turned to Jackson in 1993. The superstar delivered a performance that immediately captured the public’s imagination, beginning with a dramatic two-minute standstill before appearing in a black suit adorned with gold, bullet-belt-like details.

Jackson then launched into a series of his biggest hits, including “Billie Jean” and “Black or White.” The show also featured a powerful rendition of “We Are the World,” accompanied by more than 3,000 local children, creating a memorable moment that reinforced the performance’s message of unity.

The impact was historic. For the first time, the Super Bowl’s second half attracted more viewers than the first, helping establish a new standard for halftime entertainment. Jackson’s performance demonstrated that the show could be much more than a musical intermission, becoming a major attraction capable of drawing and retaining a massive television audience.

Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is produced by Skydance Sports in association with Optimum Productions and NFL Films. Bao Nguyen serves as director and producer.

The production team includes Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach and Lauren Gaffney for Skydance Sports; John Branca for Optimum Productions; and Amit Dey for Into the Deep End Films. Executive producers include Karen Langford for Optimum Productions, alongside Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow and Jessica Boddy for NFL Films.

With rare archival footage and a closer look at the making of a landmark performance, the documentary promises to revisit the moment Michael Jackson helped redefine the Super Bowl halftime show and cement its place in global pop culture.
