The long-awaited return of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to the world of The Mummy now has an official title, with Universal Pictures confirming that the upcoming adventure will be called The Mummy: Book of the Dead.
The new film marks the return of Fraser and Weisz as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, reuniting the beloved stars for another chapter in the supernatural action-adventure franchise. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on October 15, 2027.
While Universal has yet to reveal specific plot details, the title offers a fitting nod to the franchise’s mythology, which has long blended ancient Egyptian history, supernatural forces and high-stakes adventure.
Fraser and Weisz first starred together in 1999’s The Mummy, which followed adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan as they accidentally awaken the cursed priest Imhotep. The film became a major hit and established the pair as fan favourites, leading to the 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns.
Fraser subsequently returned for 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, although Weisz did not reprise her role as Evelyn, with Maria Bello taking over the character. The upcoming instalment will reunite the original leads after more than two decades, giving audiences another opportunity to see the pair together in the franchise.
Directing duties will be handled by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known collectively as Radio Silence. Their credits include Ready or Not, Scream (2022) and Abigail. David Coggeshall, whose previous work includes Orphan: First Kill and The Family Plan, wrote the screenplay.
Longtime franchise producer Sean Daniel will return alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and Clayton Townsend. Fraser and Jason F. Brown of Hivemind will serve as executive producers.
The new film follows Universal’s 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise, which attempted to launch a connected universe of monster movies but failed to gain the momentum the studio had hoped for.
With Fraser and Weisz back in their iconic roles, The Mummy: Book of the Dead represents a return to the original series’ much-loved characters. Further story details remain under wraps, but anticipation is already building for the franchise’s next adventure.
The Mummy: Book of the Dead opens in cinemas on October 15, 2027.
