John Mayer Teases First Solo Single in Five Years With Mysterious New Clip

John Mayer appears ready to usher in a new era of music, with the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter teasing what could be his first solo single in five years.

On Thursday, October 15, Mayer took to Instagram to share a mysterious black-and-white video accompanied by a short snippet of new music. The clip features a man and woman handcuffed together, with the caption revealing a potential release date: “I’ll run away with you… October 23.”

Although Mayer has yet to officially reveal the song’s title, the teaser has already sparked excitement among fans. Some listeners have drawn comparisons between the preview and Bruce Springsteen’s classic 1985 track “I’m on Fire,” while others are eager to hear how Mayer’s next musical chapter will unfold.

The announcement follows comments Mayer made in August during an appearance on SiriusXM’s One on One With Andy Cohen. At the time, the musician revealed that he was putting the finishing touches on a new single, even mixing the track from Cohen’s bedroom using rented studio monitors.

Mayer suggested that the release was only weeks away, explaining that he had reached the final stages of the process. He also offered a glimpse into his creative mindset, saying he wanted to focus on discovering songs that genuinely delighted him to make. He described his forthcoming material as “different,” hinting that fans could be in for a shift in direction.

The potential new single would mark Mayer’s first solo release since “Wild Blue,” which appeared on his eighth studio album, Sob Rock, in 2021. While he has remained musically active in the years since, including collaborating with Lainey Wilson on “Phone, Keys, Wallet” earlier this year, fans have been waiting for a new solo offering.

Beyond his recording plans, Mayer is also preparing for an extended run of performances at the Sphere in Las Vegas in 2027. Following the announcement of additional dates in October, his residency has expanded to 21 shows across April, May and June.

With October 23 now teased as a potential release date, anticipation is building for Mayer’s return to solo music. Whether the forthcoming track signals a larger project or stands alone as a new single remains to be seen, but the latest preview suggests that the wait for new music may soon be over.
