Zendaya is set to return to the world of science fiction, teaming up with acclaimed filmmaker Alex Garland for a new, currently untitled feature from A24.
The project will see Garland write and direct the upcoming film, with production expected to begin in 2027. As with many of the studio’s projects, details surrounding the storyline, supporting cast and potential release date are being kept firmly under wraps.
The announcement marks another collaboration between Zendaya and A24, following their work together on HBO’s hit drama series Euphoria and the dark comedy The Drama, in which she starred opposite Robert Pattinson. Their latest partnership also reunites the actress with a studio that has become a significant part of her recent career.
Garland, meanwhile, has established himself as one of contemporary cinema’s most distinctive filmmakers, moving between science fiction, psychological horror and dystopian storytelling. His previous directorial credits include Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men and Civil War, as well as the military thriller Warfare, which he co-directed with Ray Mendoza.
The filmmaker is also preparing for the release of his ambitious adaptation of the popular video game Elden Ring. The fantasy project features an ensemble cast that includes Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw and Nick Offerman, and is scheduled to arrive in cinemas in March 2028.
Zendaya’s latest casting news comes during an exceptionally busy period for the actress. In addition to her work on The Drama, she appeared in Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. She is also preparing to reprise her role as Chani in Dune: Part Three, continuing her association with one of modern cinema’s biggest science-fiction franchises.
With Garland returning to the genre that helped establish his reputation, the combination of his ambitious storytelling and Zendaya’s growing filmography makes this new A24 collaboration an intriguing prospect. Although audiences will have to wait for further details about the film, the pairing has already created plenty of anticipation for what could be another distinctive addition to the filmmaker’s body of work.
Further details, including the film’s official title, plot and additional casting announcements, have yet to be revealed.
