Denzel Washington Teams Up With Christopher McQuarrie for New United Artists Thriller

Denzel Washington is set to lead a new thriller from Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, with Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber’s United Artists giving the untitled project the green light.

The upcoming film will see the two-time Academy Award winner take on a darker, character-driven story centred on redemption, family and a past that refuses to stay buried. The film is scheduled to arrive exclusively in cinemas on October 1, 2027.

Written by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, whose previous credits include Into the Dark and Edge of Fear, the thriller follows a former police detective serving a life sentence who receives devastating news: he has terminal brain cancer.

With just six months left to live, the former detective is granted compassionate release and returns home to reconnect with the estranged daughter he abandoned. His return also brings an unexpected opportunity to meet his grandson for the first time.

Hoping to make amends for his past mistakes and find some measure of peace, he soon discovers that leaving his criminal history behind will be far more difficult than he imagined. His attempts at reconciliation are threatened by the consequences of the life he once lived, setting the stage for a tense and emotionally charged thriller.

McQuarrie will direct the film and serve as a producer alongside Heather McQuarrie. Producing for United Artists are Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt, with Joseph Restaino representing Hungry Bull Productions, Reza Moheet and Norman Aladjem for Mainstay Entertainment, and Katia Washington and Tommy Harper also attached as producers.

The project marks an intriguing new collaboration for Washington and McQuarrie. Washington has built an extensive career playing complex characters across crime dramas, action thrillers and acclaimed character studies, with credits including Training Day, Man on Fire and The Equalizer franchise.

McQuarrie, meanwhile, is best known for his long-running creative partnership with Tom Cruise on the Mission: Impossible franchise, most recently directing Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. His experience crafting suspenseful action sequences and tightly constructed thrillers makes this latest project an interesting change of direction, with the story appearing to place as much emphasis on personal consequences as it does on suspense.

Washington recently starred in Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest and appeared alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the Broadway production of Othello. He is also set to star opposite Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones in Netflix’s upcoming film The Take, previously known as Here Comes the Flood, which is expected to arrive in 2027.

With Washington leading the cast and McQuarrie behind the camera, the still-untitled thriller is shaping up to be a notable addition to United Artists’ upcoming slate. Further casting details and additional information about the production have yet to be announced.

The film is currently scheduled to open in cinemas on October 1, 2027.
