Sony Pictures is assembling an impressive cast for Grandgear, the upcoming science-fiction spectacle from Godzilla Minus One filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki. Sam Nivola, Nico Parker and Paul Giamatti are set to star in the highly anticipated project, which will mark Yamazaki’s first English-language feature film.

The film brings together a rising generation of screen talent and an acclaimed veteran actor for a project that promises to deliver large-scale action and spectacular visual effects.

Yamazaki, who earned international acclaim for his work on Godzilla Minus One, will write, direct and produce the original feature. The filmmaker’s next project sees him expanding his filmmaking ambitions into a new cinematic arena, with giant machines and monstrous threats expected to take centre stage.

The project is being produced by J.J. Abrams through his production company Bad Robot, alongside Glen Zipper. Sony Pictures secured the film following a competitive bidding process, reflecting the industry’s interest in collaborating with Yamazaki after the success of his acclaimed monster movie.

While specific character details and the full plot remain under wraps, Grandgear is expected to deliver a spectacle built around colossal mechanical combat. Early footage presented at CinemaCon in April offered audiences a glimpse of giant robots battling in an urban environment, hinting at an action-driven experience that could appeal to fans of both science-fiction and kaiju cinema.

The casting of Nivola, Parker and Giamatti adds another layer of intrigue to the production. Nivola has attracted attention for his work in The White Lotus, while Parker is known for her performances in The Last of Us and Dumbo. Giamatti, meanwhile, brings an extensive body of acclaimed work to the project, including The Holdovers and Billions.

Grandgear is currently scheduled to arrive in US cinemas on January 14, 2028, following an adjustment to its previously announced release date. Production is expected to begin in 2027.

With Yamazaki leading the creative team and Abrams helping bring the ambitious project to the screen, Grandgear is shaping up to be an exciting next chapter for the filmmaker as he makes his English-language debut.
