Hulu is developing These Summer Storms, a new family drama based on Sarah MacLean’s 2025 novel, with Nobody Wants This creators Erin and Sara Foster attached to executive produce alongside writer and producer Melanie Marnich.
The project brings the Foster sisters together with 20th Television through their production company, Fatigue Sisters, which has an overall deal with the studio. The adaptation will explore the complicated relationships, long-buried tensions and family secrets surrounding a wealthy dynasty.
At the centre of the story is Alice Storm, who has spent the past five years building a life away from her powerful family after being cast out of their private island home off the coast of Rhode Island. Having distanced herself from the Storm name, its considerable influence and its enormous fortune, Alice has little reason to return to the world she left behind.
However, the unexpected death of her larger-than-life father forces her back into the family’s orbit, setting the stage for a turbulent reunion. As Alice confronts the people and circumstances she once escaped, the family’s wealth and influence become part of a much more complicated personal reckoning.
Marnich will write and executive produce the series. Her previous television credits include Apples Never Fall, the adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel starring Annette Bening, as well as A Murder at the End of the World.
Erin and Sara Foster will executive produce alongside Montana McBirney for Fatigue Sisters, Oly Obst of 3 Arts Entertainment, and MacLean herself.
MacLean has expressed enthusiasm for bringing her novel to the screen, praising the creative team’s vision and Marnich’s writing. The author is particularly excited to see the complicated Storm family brought to a new audience through the television adaptation.
The project adds to the Foster sisters’ growing slate of television work. Erin Foster created Nobody Wants This, the Netflix romantic comedy starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, with Sara Foster also serving as an executive producer. The series has helped establish the sisters as a creative team with a growing presence in television.
With These Summer Storms, the team turns its attention to a family drama driven by wealth, estrangement and the complicated bonds that can persist even after relationships have fractured.
The series remains in development at Hulu, with casting details, production plans and a premiere date yet to be announced.
