Melanie Lynskey is set to take on one of Australia’s most notorious criminal cases, starring as Erin Patterson in Mushroom Murders, a new six-part limited drama series commissioned by Paramount+.
The Emmy-nominated actress, known for her acclaimed performances in Yellowjackets and The Last of Us, will also serve as an executive producer on the Australian production, which will revisit the events surrounding the infamous Leongatha mushroom poisoning case.
Announced as part of Paramount Australia’s upcoming programming slate, Mushroom Murders will explore the 97 days between the July 2023 lunch that shocked the nation and Patterson’s subsequent arrest.
The case attracted international attention after Patterson served individual beef Wellingtons to her estranged in-laws and other relatives at her home in Victoria. Three guests — Don and Gail Patterson, along with Heather Wilkinson — later died after consuming food containing highly toxic death cap mushrooms. Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, survived after becoming seriously ill.
Patterson was convicted of murdering the three victims and attempting to murder Ian Wilkinson. She was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2025 and is appealing her convictions.
Rather than simply revisiting the headlines, the upcoming drama will focus on the period between the fatal gathering and Patterson’s arrest, offering a closer look at the events surrounding a case that captivated audiences across Australia and around the world.
Lynskey’s involvement marks another significant role for the New Zealand-born actress, whose career has spanned independent cinema, acclaimed television dramas and major international productions. Her credits include Heavenly Creatures, Two and a Half Men, Yellowjackets and The Last of Us.
