Liam Neeson is stepping onto the ice for his next film role, taking on the story of a legendary hockey coach in Believe 13, an upcoming biographical sports drama inspired by real-life events.
As reported by Deadline, Neeson will portray Jack Blatherwick, a respected hockey trainer and coach whose relationship with young player Jack “Jabby” Jablonski became a powerful story of resilience, friendship and perseverance following a life-changing sporting injury.
The film will be directed by Robert Lorenz, reuniting him with Neeson for their third collaboration following The Marksman and In the Land of Saints and Sinners. Randy Brown has written the screenplay, drawing inspiration from the lives of Blatherwick and Jablonski.
Believe 13 will explore the unlikely connection between two individuals from different generations who share a deep passion for hockey. After a devastating injury threatens to derail Jabby’s future, Blatherwick helps him navigate the emotional challenges that follow, with their growing friendship ultimately inspiring both of them to find renewed purpose.
Jablonski was a highly regarded 16-year-old high school hockey player when he suffered a serious spinal injury that left him paralysed. Wearing jersey number 13, he became a symbol of determination through his recovery and the support he inspired within the hockey community. His high school team would go on to win a state championship, adding another remarkable chapter to his story.
Blatherwick, meanwhile, built a distinguished career as a hockey training physiologist and high school coach. He also helped Herb Brooks prepare the 1980 United States Olympic hockey team, which famously defeated the Soviet Union in the historic match known as the “Miracle on Ice.” Blatherwick later joined Brooks’ staff with the New York Rangers.
The film’s producers describe Blatherwick as a brilliant but isolated former hockey figure who has lost his sense of purpose. His encounter with Jabby, whose promising future is threatened by tragedy, develops into a friendship that changes both their lives and inspires Jabby’s teammates to pursue an extraordinary achievement.
Kristin Hahn of Hahnscape Entertainment and Michele Weisler are producing alongside Clearblack Films, with Myles Nestel of Solution Entertainment and Matt Einstein of Tradition Pictures also attached as producers. Hahn secured the life rights and originated the feature project.
Principal photography is scheduled to begin in Minnesota in early 2027, with additional casting still underway. The project is also being introduced to international buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.
Neeson, best known for his commanding performances in action thrillers including Taken, has long been a hockey enthusiast and a regular attendee at New York Rangers games. His casting brings a personal connection to the sport to a story that reaches well beyond competition.
With its focus on overcoming adversity, finding purpose after tragedy and the lasting impact of human connection, Believe 13 aims to deliver an emotional sports drama grounded in real-life inspiration. Further casting announcements and release details have yet to be revealed.
