Maya Hawke Set to Star in Upcoming ‘Magic: The Gathering Movie’

The upcoming live-action adaptation of Magic: The Gathering may have secured its first major star, with Stranger Things actress Maya Hawke reportedly in talks to join the highly anticipated project.

According to sources cited by Deadline, Hawke is set to appear in the film, although details about her character remain under wraps. While the movie is expected to feature an ensemble cast, her role is believed to be a significant one. Producers have reportedly made securing Hawke a priority, giving the actress the first opportunity to join the project ahead of the wider casting process.

The film is being developed through a partnership between Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment, with plans to expand the popular franchise into a live-action cinematic and television universe. Matt Johnson, known for his work as a filmmaker and screenwriter, is attached to direct and co-write the movie alongside Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald.

First launched in 1993, Magic: The Gathering pioneered the trading card game genre and has since evolved into a billion-dollar global entertainment franchise. Its popularity extends far beyond the tabletop, with a growing presence across digital gaming, publishing, streaming, consumer products and live events.

Today, the franchise boasts more than 50 million fans worldwide, supported by a passionate community and an extensive international competitive gaming scene. Major conventions, professional tournaments and a thriving market for collectible cards have helped establish Magic as one of the most influential properties in gaming and fantasy entertainment.

Set across a vast multiverse of fantasy worlds, Magic: The Gathering features an expansive mythology that continues to grow through new card releases, novels and collaborations with major entertainment franchises. Its crossover partnerships have included popular properties such as Final Fantasy, Marvel, Star Trek, Dungeons & Dragons and The Lord of the Rings.

With Maya Hawke potentially leading the way as its first major casting announcement, the upcoming adaptation marks an important step in bringing the beloved fantasy universe to the big screen.
