Natalia Dyer and Elijah Wood Join ‘1408’ Sequel Alongside Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack

A sequel to the 2007 supernatural horror hit 1408 is officially in development, with Natalia Dyer and Elijah Wood joining the cast alongside original stars Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack, who are currently negotiating their returns.

Director Mikael Håfström, who helmed the original film, is returning to direct the sequel. He will also co-write the screenplay with Mark Verheiden.

According to sources familiar with the project, Dyer will take on the lead role, while Wood will appear in a supporting capacity. Jackson and Cusack are expected to reprise their original characters but will have smaller roles in the follow-up. Details about the new characters and storyline are being kept confidential.

The project is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Richard Saperstein of Bluestone Entertainment, Spyglass Media Group and Frank Mayor. Bluestone Entertainment and FilmNation Entertainment are co-financing the film. FilmNation will handle international distribution, while sharing domestic distribution representation with WME Independent. The companies are expected to introduce the project to potential buyers at the upcoming American Film Market (AFM).

John Papsidera, known for his work on The Odyssey, has been brought on as casting director. Filming is currently scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

The original 1408, based on Stephen King’s 1999 short story, follows paranormal writer Mike Enslin (Cusack), who investigates reports of mysterious and deadly occurrences inside room 1408 at New York City’s Dolphin Hotel while researching his latest book about haunted locations. Jackson portrays Gerald Olin, the hotel’s manager, who warns Enslin about the room’s terrifying history.

Although the sequel’s storyline has yet to be revealed, the return of the original director and cast members is expected to bring a familiar atmosphere to the new chapter.

Released by MGM in 2007, 1408 became a cult favorite among horror fans, earning approximately $132 million worldwide against a production budget of just $25 million.

Interestingly, Cusack had previously expressed interest in revisiting the film, even suggesting that it was the only movie from his career he would consider making a sequel to. In a 2025 interview with People, the actor revealed that 1408 was the one project he felt could be worth revisiting, making the upcoming sequel a particularly fitting return for the original star.
