Olivia Rodrigo is getting into the holiday spirit with the release of her first-ever original Christmas song, “take me home (4 christmas)”. The festive new single is out now, accompanied by a music video featuring Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon and Saturday Night Live comedian Ben Marshall.
Blending holiday cheer with romantic frustration, the song tells the story of a girlfriend who has had enough of spending her evenings at the same bar listening to a Christmas cover band. All she wants is for her partner to invite her home for the holidays and introduce her to his family as a sign that their relationship is serious.
Rodrigo brings the story to life through lyrics imagining a night of drinking with his parents, followed by a hungover brunch with his sister. The track even includes a playful nod to the holiday classic “Feliz Navidad” before ending with a final twist that suggests she may have been expecting him to spend Christmas at her family’s home instead.
Produced by Dan Nigro, the song was co-written by Rodrigo, Nigro and Amy Allen. Rodrigo revealed on Instagram that the trio actually wrote the track last summer, adding that she was excited to finally share it now that Christmas is just around the corner.
The music video was first teased through a festive party-game concept, in which guests wore Christmas crowns with mystery labels and had to guess their identities. The labels ultimately spelled out Rodrigo’s name, building anticipation for the release.
Nixon’s appearance is particularly fitting, given Rodrigo’s love for Sex and the City. Earlier this year, the singer told Jimmy Fallon that the iconic series is her favourite television show and even revealed that it inspired one of the songs on her latest album.
The Christmas release arrives following an impressive few months for Rodrigo. In October, her remix of “expectations” featuring Chappell Roan, accompanied by a music video starring David Byrne, made a major impact on the Billboard Hot 100, jumping from No. 63 to No. 3 in its debut week. The release also helped propel her June album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Meanwhile, Rodrigo continues her sold-out Unraveled tour, which has sold more than one million tickets and is scheduled to run through May 2027.
Fans looking to add the new single to their collections can also purchase physical editions, with both a 7-inch vinyl and cassette available through her official online store.
With a brand-new original Christmas track now in the mix, Rodrigo could also be a contender for the UK’s coveted Christmas No. 1. Under the Official Charts rules, new releases have an advantage over older catalogue tracks, giving “take me home (4 christmas)” a potential shot at claiming the festive top spot.
