The Review: The Thriller That’ll Strap You In, ‘Retribution’

For a thrilling 91minutes, Nimrod Antal’s Retribution takes us on a malevolent joyride. Meet Matt Turner (Liam Neeson), the workaholic banker turned unwitting chauffeur to his restless kids, whose routine school run takes a chilling turn when an unknown caller claims their luxury SUV is rigged with a bomb. Demanding Matt’s attention, the villain’s first order is to confiscate the kids’ phones, the first step in setting the scene for this high octane joyride.

As the youngsters reluctantly comply, tension initially grips the screen. Antal and screenwriter Chris Salmanpour adapt the 2015 Spanish film “El Desconocido” with a script that screams thrill. Neeson’s opening sequence, an impressive boxing workout interrupted by his boss (Matthew Modine), who hails him as a “credit to capitalism”, offers a glimpse into Matt’s tumultuous life. Neeson’s undeniable commitment to his roles is what makes his films so compelling to watch.

Retribution immerses viewers in a relentless high-stakes showdown. Trapped inside a vehicle, Turner and his children become pawns in a deadly game orchestrated by a determined caller. As the tension escalates, Europol leads a gripping manhunt to capture Matt. This heart-pounding thriller, captivates from the start with intense visuals, including nail-biting close-ups of a ticking car bomb.

Liam Neeson shines as Turner, navigating an intricate web of danger to protect his family. His expressive face speaks volumes, emphasizing the film’s reliance on facial cues and tension-filled silence. Embeth Davidtz delivers a powerful performance as Heather, portraying the frustration of a neglected spouse. Lilly Aspell impresses as Turner’s earnest daughter, exuding authenticity, while Jack Champion captures teenage rebellion effortlessly.

Retribution is an immersive ticking clock thriller that straps audiences in for the ride of their lives. It’s a ride you don’t want to miss.
