Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway have signed on to star in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming film adaptation of Alone at Dawn, a bestselling novel from 2019 written by Dan Schilling and Lori Chapman Longfritz. The war drama will be directed by renowned filmmaker Ron Howard, who has a distinguished track record of bringing true stories to the big screen, including Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, and Thirteen Lives.
According to Deadline, Alone at Dawn is based on the true story of Longfritz’s brother, Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman. During the Afghanistan war, Chapman sacrificed his life to protect his fellow soldiers. The film will follow an intelligence officer investigating Chapman’s heroism, ultimately uncovering why he merits the Medal of Honor. Dan Schilling, who was also a Combat Control Technician, will serve as the film’s military consultant.
Howard will direct from a screenplay by Michael Russell Gunn, with earlier drafts revised by Erin Cressida Wilson and Amy Herzog. The project is produced by Kristy Grisham, William Connor, and Patrick Newall, with Gunn also serving as an executive producer. The production is a collaboration between Imagine Entertainment, The Hideaway Entertainment, and Thruline Entertainment.
The novel’s official synopsis describes Chapman’s extraordinary bravery: after saving his SEAL teammates and, despite being mortally wounded, engaging multiple enemies alone to protect an incoming rescue team, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Chapman is the first airman in nearly fifty years to receive this prestigious recognition, reserved for America’s most heroic figures.
Alone at Dawn also offers a behind-the-scenes look into the world of Air Force Combat Controllers—the most versatile and lethal special operations force. These personnel surpass the qualifications of Navy SEALs and Army Delta Force teams, operating with rapid precision and decisiveness in life-threatening situations.
