INsider’s Guide: Ivory Daze, Halina Rice, Dear Boy, Beauty Sleep, Mason Lowe…

Lincoln, Nebraska’s rising grunge-shoegaze trio Ivory Daze are stepping boldly into a new chapter with the release of their latest EP, “Chlorine,”out now via Quiet Panic (M.U.T.T., Slow Crush). Alongside the EP is a  music video for the single “Corset.”

The project captures the band’s evolution into one of the Midwest’s most compelling underground acts — equal parts grit, melody, and emotional honesty.

Formed by three longtime friends — Isahen Harms (guitar, vocals, lyrics), Maeve Nelson (drums), and Van Foster (bass) — Ivory Daze have spent the past few years building their sound and fanbase the old-fashioned way: through relentless touring and a shared belief in the power of connection through noise.

“Musically inspired by the chorus layered guitar tracks of the 80s (Purple Rain by Prince) and the biggest fuzz tone you can get from bands like The Melvins and Smashing Pumpkins,” Harms said.

At the center of it all lies Harms’ creative philosophy: “I just write pop songs with distortion.”

But don’t let the simplicity fool you — Ivory Daze’s music is anything but. With Nelson and Foster’s driving rhythm section anchoring Harms’ soaring guitar work and raw, evocative vocals, the trio channel the textures of shoegaze, the aggression of grunge, and the urgency of punk into something fresh and immediate.

On “Chlorine” Ivory Daze lean into the push and pull between chaos and melody, bridging the spirit of ’80s and ’90s guitar music with their own modern intensity. The result is a record that feels both nostalgic and vital, capturing the trio’s lived-in chemistry and the cathartic energy of their sweat-soaked live shows.

Known for her “immersive-first” approach to electronic music, Rice continues to blur the boundaries between sound, technology, and emotion — pairing her intricately designed productions with cutting-edge visual artistry and spatial audio experiences.

Following the critical success of her 2024 album “EVOLVE,” Rice pushes her sonic and visual vision even further with “UNREALITY.”

“I wanted to build on the success of previous tracks to inspire people to move and to be moved,” Rice said. “I can’t wait to present the new audiovisual shows at such prestigious events as ADE and MUTEK Japan.”

Collaborating once again with visual artist Freny Antony and technology company Target3D, Rice continues to break new ground in immersive video. For the key track “ENDLESS,” the team employed a pioneering Gaussian Splattingtechnique to create breathtaking 360° visuals of dancer and choreographer Anna Vargha.

This autumn, Rice will bring her full audiovisual performance to stages worldwide, including headline shows at HERE at Outernet (London) and The Other Side during Amsterdam Dance Event, where her set will be presented in L-ISA spatial audio by L-Acoustics. She will also make her Tokyo debut this November as part of MUTEK Japan.

Since 2020, Halina Rice has been establishing herself as one of the most forward-thinking figures in immersive electronic art — crafting experiences that dissolve the barrier between audience and performance.

“My main focus is to present compelling, emotive and innovative music and visuals in order to move the audience outside of their day to day experience,” she said. “I want people to come away from the shows feeling inspired.”

With “UNREALITY,” Rice solidifies her place at the intersection of electronic music, technology, and emotion — a visionary voice shaping the future of sound and space.

Los Angeles indie rockers Dear Boy are back with “Celebrator,” their long-awaited sophomore album, out now via Last Gang Records. Following a string of acclaimed singles, the record finds the band stripping away perfectionism and rediscovering the pure joy of creation — an unfiltered celebration of friendship, spontaneity, and sound.

Described by the band as “melodic, moving, and unpredictable,” “Celebrator” captures the electricity of a group reconnecting with their roots. Written in just twelve sessions and recorded live in only two weeks, the album trades precision for pulse — each track brimming with raw emotion and real-time chemistry.

“We made this album to remember why we do this in the first place,” the band shared. “Because we love it. We adore each other. Joy. Connection. Heartbreak. Celebration. We’re not interested in anything other than that.”

That vitality courses through the record, from the shoegaze-trip hop haze of “Kelly Green” to the Madchester-inspired groove of “The Address.” But the album’s beating heart lies in “Now More Than Ever,” a soaring anthem drenched in layered guitars and driving rhythms. Frontman Ben Grey’s vocals sway between aching intimacy and explosive power, channeling the same emotional honesty that fueled Dear Boy’s acclaimed debut “Forever Sometimes” (2022).

Produced by Aron Kobayashi Ritch (Momma, Been Stellar, Snail Mail), “Celebrator” captures the band in their most dynamic and human form.

Formed in London by Ben Grey and Keith Cooper before returning to Los Angeles, the band — rounded out by Austin Hayman (guitar) and Lucy Lawrence (bass, vocals) — has carved out a sound that bridges continents and eras. With influences spanning The Cure, Pulp, The Stone Roses, Cocteau Twins, and R.E.M., Dear Boy fuse Britpop shimmer with California warmth.

Derry’s “radical alt-pop” duo Beauty Sleep — consisting of producer-songwriters Cheylene Murphy and Ryan McGroarty — returned with their new album “The Whole Damn Cake.” To introduce it, they led the release with the single “You (You’re All I Wanted).”

Layered, euphoric, and full of heart, the track captures the pair’s signature blend of dreamy alt-pop and lo-fi charm, complete with lush harmonies and an irresistible indie-sleaze guitar hook.

“The song is about failing upwards,” Murphy said. “A bit of a play on the idea that a past version of you would be proud of where you are, so looking ahead to a mythical future version of yourself that has the life you dreamed of, and trying to take steps to get closer to meeting them.”

Accompanying the single is a theatrical, vaudeville-inspired video filmed in Halyon Village, Donegal, directed by Brogan Wakely with production design by Zoe Harking and choreography from Emily McDonagh.

“The song is our love letter to failing and not giving up, so naturally we had to do a vaudeville style music video where we fail at being dancers, clowns, magicians and psychics before finding ourselves with music,” Murphy said.

The single set the stage for the release of the duo’s highly anticipated second album, “The Whole Damn Cake,” out now via Alcopop! Records. Following a string of acclaimed singles including “BIG + BAD,” “Radical Happiness,” “Unfamiliar,” and “Send It To The Sea,” the band has earned support from RTÉ 2FM, Today FM, EARMILK, Hot Press, and The Thin Air, among others.

BEAUTY SLEEP will join Jessica Winter at Dublin’s Academy 2 on October 21st, before hitting the road for their UK headline tour this November — including an album release show at the Belfast Empire on November 20th.

Seattle drummer and songwriter Mason Lowe — best known for keeping time in feel-good classic rock outfit Bread & Butter — is stepping back into the spotlight with his second solo release, “Crashes Your Party,” out now via Bubblebutt Records.

The two-song 7” single captures the rise and fall of a self-destructive antihero, balancing swaggering fuzz and reckless charm with moments of real vulnerability.

“I’m drawn to people who are kinda outlaws,” Lowe explains. “They’re bold, they’re surprisingly smart. They can be troubled, they do things on their own terms. I’m the opposite. I worry about everything. I’m wondering what other people are thinking… I’m worrying right now!” Lowe continues, “I’m drawn to people with that wild energy – some of my best friends are wild! The story arc in this pair of songs is something I’ve seen up close… many times. I put it to music.”

The A-side, “I’m Not Sorry,” kicks the door open with bass harmonica, xylophone, and a groove that feels like chaos in motion. It’s wild, funny, and a little dangerous. Its companion track, “Crashin’ In,” softens the edges, peeling back the bravado to reveal the heartbreak beneath. Together, the pair creates a cinematic mini-story of burnout and aftermath — one that hums with Lowe’s signature mix of humor, hooks, and heart.

Following his 2023 debut “Morning People” on Killroom Records, “Crashes Your Party” marks a darker, moodier turn for Lowe, without losing the warmth that’s made his music so inviting. Between the fuzz, harmonies, and sly self-awareness, Lowe continues to build his own idiosyncratic world — one hook at a time.

Irish singer-songwriter Ger Eaton has long been a familiar name in his homeland — a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and baroque-pop craftsman whose songs shimmer with emotion and cinematic scope. Now, Eaton has released his long-awaited debut album “Season Changes,” out now via Dimple Discs, the London-based label known for championing Irish artistry.

In the lead-up to the record, Eaton has unveiled two new singles — “Hollow” and “The Time It Takes To Fall” — lush, heartfelt previews of an album that wears its heartbreak proudly on its sleeve. Blending classic pop sophistication with raw honesty, “Season Changes” chronicles the dissolution of a long relationship with both vulnerability and grace.

“‘Season Changes’ is essentially an old fashioned break-up LP,” he said. “All of the songs deal with the complexities, both emotional and physical, that come with the ending of a very long and significant relationship.

Musically, the album finds Eaton at his most ambitious, weaving together baroque pop, orchestral balladry, and folk textures in arrangements that recall Scott Walker, Brian Wilson, and Jimmy Webb, while maintaining a distinctly modern edge.

Recorded during a period of personal transition, the songs reflect Eaton’s instinct to turn pain into beauty.

Following a string of acclaimed singles and a growing reputation for his lush live performances, Eaton will bring “Season Changes” to life with an 11-piece band at The National Concert Hall in Dublin on October 23, with support from Andrew Keeling and Toni Kay.

Veteran American singer-songwriter Turner Cody returned with his heartfelt new single “We Need Each Other,” out now via Capitane Records. The track serves as an early preview of his forthcoming album “Out For Blood,” due in 2025.

Emerging from New York’s storied Anti-Folk scene at the Sidewalk Café in 1999, Cody has spent over two decades crafting a body of work that bridges lo-fi folk intimacy with classic rock and country warmth.

Praised for his lyrical depth and timeless storytelling, his songs have appeared in Jacques Audiard’s Oscar-nominated film Un Prophète and inspired the 2019 tribute compilation Songs of Turner Cody, which featured Adam Green, Jeffrey Lewis, and Herman Dune, among others.

Reflecting on the origins of “We Need Each Other,” Cody shares: “I didn’t mean to write this song. It just came to me. I was thinking about how my wife really makes me a better person — and how all I really do for her is drive her to work (she doesn’t drive). There’s something in that imbalance that felt true, and human. Not about roles or hierarchies, but about interdependence. We’re different, sure, but we really do need each other.”

Since 2018, Cody has worked closely with Belgian label Capitane Records and producer Nicolas Michaux, who helmed both his acclaimed 2021 album “Friends in High Places” and the upcoming “Out For Blood.” Now based in Illinois, Cody continues to blend literary lyricism with a deep affection for the traditions of popular song.
