A24 has enlisted Emmy-winning creator Michaela Coel to write and direct a remake of the 1988 action classic Bloodsport, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. According to Deadline, Coel will craft a fresh take on the iconic martial arts film.
“I have long admired fighters and have been in awe of the discipline, focus, and solitude the sport requires,” Coel expressed in a statement. “I’m thrilled to explore this world, especially with A24 as my partner. LET’S F*CKING GO.”
Coel is best known for creating, writing, co-directing, and starring in I May Destroy You, a critically acclaimed dramedy series that earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Her acting credits include roles in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, The Christophers, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith—the latter earning her an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
Producers on the project include Marc Toberoff and Alberto Lensi, with Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle serving as executive producers. A24 will handle financing and distribution.
“In 1988, Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts, and I’m eager to bring that high-energy tournament back to the big screen,” Toberoff said.
The news of a Bloodsport reboot first emerged in April 2025, when A24 was in negotiations to acquire the rights.
Originally, the 1988 film depicted U.S. Army Captain Frank Dux, played by Van Damme, a ninjutsu expert who travels to Hong Kong to compete in an underground martial arts tournament called the Kumite. Directed by Newt Arnold, Bloodsport became a cult hit, grossing $50 million against a modest budget of under $2.5 million, and catapulted Van Damme into international stardom.
The film spawned four sequels, though none matched the original’s popularity. Over the past 15 years, several reboot attempts have been made, including projects involving directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch. Now, Coel has the opportunity to bring her unique vision to this martial arts classic.
