Nicolas Cage’s 2005 Classic “Lords of War” Gets a Sequel

A beloved Nicolas Cage film from 2005 is making a comeback with a major update that is sure to thrill fans. Vertical has announced that it has acquired the U.S. rights to Andrew Niccol’s forthcoming sequel, Lords of War, the next chapter in the crime drama franchise that originally captivated audiences over a decade ago. The studio also revealed plans to showcase footage of the new film at CinemaCon 2026, with a theatrical release scheduled for 2027.

As previously reported, the sequel will feature returning star Nicolas Cage alongside new cast members Bill Skarsgård, Laura Harrier, Sylvia Hoeks, and Greg Tarzan Davis. Andrew Niccol will once again serve as the writer and director, with Cage, Philippe Rousselet, and Fabrice Gianfermi producing the project.

According to Vertical, Lords of War will follow Cage’s character, Yuri Orlov, a notorious arms dealer. The story introduces his son, Anton (Skarsgård), a ruthless mercenary mastermind determined to outdo his father by building a private army and exploiting America’s wars in the Middle East. The film will explore their deadly rivalry, driven by themes of power, ambition, and betrayal, with the global arms trade hanging in the balance. The official synopsis notes: “What begins as a shocking revelation ignites a fierce father-son rivalry fueled by power, ambition, and betrayal – with the global arms trade hanging in the balance.”

The original Lords of War was inspired by the real-life stories of Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout and starred Ethan Hawke, Jared Leto, and Bridget Moynahan. Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, the film has since gained a strong fan following and is regarded as a standout in Cage’s career. Fans can look forward to the sequel arriving in theaters in 2027.
