Mel Gibson has completed his highly anticipated sequel to The Passion of the Christ, titled The Resurrection of the Christ. Recently, the project underwent a significant change that is expected to improve its prospects.
Gibson returns as director for both parts of The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One and Part Two. He co-wrote the scripts alongside Randall Wallace, with the story originating from Gibson, Wallace, and Donal Gibson. The films will focus on Jesus Christ’s resurrection, occurring three days after his crucifixion.

Jaakko Ohtonen has been cast to play Jesus Christ, taking over from Jim Caviezel, who portrayed the role in The Passion. Mariela Garriga replaces Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. The cast also includes Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Rupert Everett.

Initially, the Christian-themed movies were scheduled for release in 2027: Part One on March 26, 2027 (Good Friday), and Part Two on May 6, 2027 (Ascension Day). However, Lionsgate has adjusted these dates—Part One will now debut on May 6, 2027 (Ascension Day), and Part Two has been moved to May 25, 2028 (also Ascension Day and Memorial Day Weekend). While delaying releases can sometimes be risky, in this case, it appears to be a strategic move. Releasing two large-scale films just 40 days apart might not be feasible, as many viewers take time before watching a sequel, and asking audiences to return less than two months after the first installment could hinder box office success.
