Sony Brings Back the Hit Comedy Franchise with an Unexpected Twist: 24 Jump Street

Sony is reviving its popular comedy franchise with a third installment, but this time, the film’s title takes an unexpected leap forward. Reports indicate that Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube are in talks to reprise their roles, while the studio has officially announced the film as 24 Jump Street, bypassing the logical numerical sequence.

This move marks the return of a franchise that has been dormant for over ten years, reuniting the talented creative team behind two of the highest-grossing R-rated comedies of the past two decades. The choice of the title is no coincidence; it directly references the ending of 22 Jump Street, which featured a fast-paced montage imagining Schmidt and Jenko infiltrating various institutions like medical school, culinary school, dance academies, firefighter training, seminary, and even space—all serving as a satirical take on Hollywood franchise fatigue. This fictional “23 Jump Street” was a playful joke, and continuing the numbering with 24 Jump Street continues that satirical streak.

Rodney Rothman, a writer on 22 Jump Street, will direct the new film, working from a script he co-wrote with Jonah Hill and Meghan Malloy. Original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are returning as producers, alongside Neal H. Moritz. Tatum and Reid Carolin will produce through their Free Association banner, while Hill and Matt Dines are producing via their Strong Baby company. Moritz shared a photo of the script on Instagram, captioning it with “A picture says a thousand words,” hinting at the project’s progress.

The original 21 Jump Street film, released in 2012, starred Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as two inept police officers undercover at a high school. Its 2014 sequel moved the operation to college and performed even better at the box office. Both films cleverly poked fun at their own status as reboots of the 1980s TV series starring Johnny Depp.

While a third film has been in development for years, Tatum once described a previous script titled 23 Jump Street as the “best” he had ever read for a third installment. However, the release date for 24 Jump Street has yet to be announced, leaving fans eager for the franchise’s next chapter.
