First Look At Haley Lu Richardson In ‘Zi’

According to Deadline, Grasshopper Film has acquired the North American distribution rights to Kogonada’s latest film, Zi. The movie had its world premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, and a theatrical release is planned for the fall.

Zi is a science fiction and supernatural-themed film starring Michelle Mao, Haley Lu Richardson, and Jin Ha. The story is set in Hong Kong and follows a young woman haunted by visions of her future self. Her encounter with a stranger who alters the course of her night—and potentially her life—drives the narrative.

The deal was negotiated between Grasshopper Film founder and president Ryan Krivoshey and Kogonada, who both wrote and directed the film. Kogonada, a BAFTA nominee, expressed his excitement about the acquisition, saying, “Grasshopper Film distributing Zi is a full circle moment for me. Not long after Grasshopper was founded in 2015, I reached out to Ryan—whom I didn’t know at the time—to express my gratitude for their existence. They launched with films from Hong Sang-soo, Bi Gan, and Asghar Farhadi—films that often weren’t easily available in the U.S. but that I deeply cared about. I wanted to let Ryan know how much I appreciated their work. This was before I made my first feature, and now here we are. I couldn’t be more delighted and honored.”

Zi was produced by Chung An, Christopher Radcliff, Benjamin Loeb, Kogonada, Haley Lu Richardson, Michelle Mao, and Jin Ha.
