Jim Carrey in Talks to Return for ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ Sequel

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jim Carrey is officially in negotiations to reprise his role in a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas for Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. Ron Howard, who directed the original film, is set to return as director and will also serve as a producer alongside Brian Grazer. The screenplay is being crafted by writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel.

The original film, released in 2000, featured Carrey as the iconic Grinch and was based on Dr. Seuss’s 1957 children’s book of the same name. It received critical acclaim, winning the Best Makeup Oscar at the 73rd Academy Awards and earning nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction. The movie was a massive commercial success, grossing approximately $346.5 million worldwide, making it the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2000.

Plot details for the upcoming sequel remain under wraps. Interestingly, a new Dr. Seuss book titled How the Grinch Lost Christmas! was published in 2023, sparking speculation about whether the film will incorporate elements from this recent publication.

The project is overseen by Susan Brandt for Dr. Seuss Enterprises, with Britt Hennemuth and Christina Hoffrogge handling production for Universal. As of now, no official release date has been announced.
