The official synopsis describes Werwulf as “Robert Eggers’ most visceral and haunting experience yet.” Presented by Focus Features, the film is described as “a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation, and the devil within.” The initial image released features Taylor-Johnson amid a dense, wild forest, flanked by several canines. His character, set in the 13th century, is seen gripping a weapon, hinting at a tense and intense narrative.

Eggers, whose notable works include The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, continues to build anticipation with Werwulf, a period Gothic horror. His recent project, Nosferatu (2024), was praised by critics and audiences alike, earning an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and a 73% score on the Popcornmeter.

Taylor-Johnson, meanwhile, was most recently seen in 28 Years Later, a sequel to the iconic 28 Days Later. The 2025 horror thriller, which also starred Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, Danny Boyle, Erin Kellyman, Edvin Ryding, and Emma Laird, gained critical acclaim and commercial success.

Production of Werwulf has been underway for some time. Last year, several behind-the-scenes photos from filming surfaced online. This year, the cast was further expanded with the addition of Bodhi Rae Breathnach, known for his role in Hamnet.

The ensemble cast also includes Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson, all of whom have previously collaborated with Eggers.

Co-written by Robert Eggers and Sjón, Werwulf is also produced by them along with Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Garrett Bird. The executive producers are Chris Columbus, Eleanor Columbus, and Bernard Bellew.
Werwulf is scheduled for release in theaters on December 25, 2026.
