Katy Perry Wreaking Havoc In ‘Watch It Burn’

Katy Perry is igniting her past with her latest single, “Watch It Burn,” released Thursday night (June 25), accompanied by a cinematic new music video.

As teased in previews shared by the pop star before its debut, the music video depicts her causing chaos as a monstrous scorpion-human hybrid. The cathartic pop-rock track — which Perry performed live prior to its official release at O Son do Camiño in Spain and Rock in Rio Lisboa — features lyrics about reclaiming her life by saying farewell to a long-term relationship. “Watch It Burn” is Perry’s first release since her November single “Bandaids.” Before that, she released her 2024 album 143, which reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Lyrically, the song appears to reference Perry’s breakup last year from fiancé Orlando Bloom, with whom she shares daughter Daisy. During a conversation with co-writer Justin Tranter on his Unfamous podcast, Perry shared, “In ‘Watch It Burn,’ I am wrestling with my darkness, but last year was pretty tough.” She added, “I’ve never really given myself permission to be angry about certain things, but I should be f—king angry. I’ve pushed it down, but I need to allow myself that moment of anger.”

Currently, Perry is in a relationship with Justin Trudeau, whom she called “the love of my life” during a Q&A at the premiere of her Lifetimes Tour concert film in New York earlier this month. “I fly super high,” she said. “Sometimes I need to be anchored. Having that anchor makes me feel really whole.”
