Warner Bros. Acquires ‘Siren Head’ Horror Project from Viral Meme to Screen

Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to Siren Head, a horror package inspired by the popular internet meme created by Trevor Henderson. Brian Duffield is attached to direct the project, which features a screenplay co-written with Zach Cregger, according to sources confirmed by Deadline.

The film is based on an original concept by Cregger and secured a deal at Warner Bros. following a competitive five-way bidding war. Cregger and Duffield will serve as producers, alongside Roy Lee, Andrew Childs, and Scott Glassgold. Henderson, the original creator and rights holder of the Siren Head character, will also be an executive producer.

Siren Head is a prime example of the emerging trend of youth-oriented, internet-driven horror IPs that studios are eager to develop. Its rise in popularity mirrors the success of A24’s Backrooms, a breakout horror film adapted by 21-year-old Kane Parsons from his creepypasta-inspired YouTube shorts. First introduced in August 2018 by Canadian horror artist Trevor Henderson, Siren Head features hand-drawn monsters digitally composited into real photographs. The creature is depicted as a towering, gaunt humanoid—approximately 40 feet tall—that stalks rural towns and forests across North America. It blends seamlessly into the environment and emits eerie, distorted sounds to disorient and attract prey.

The character’s mainstream visibility surged thanks to YouTube content creator Markiplier, who started featuring Siren Head on his channel in 2020. Since then, Siren Head has become a staple of horror content on social media, garnering millions of views from fan-generated videos and discussions.

Brian Duffield, known for the sci-fi horror film No One Will Save You—starring Kaitlyn Dever—has upcoming projects, including the survival thriller Whalefall, based on Daniel Kraus’s novel, set for release via 20th Century on October 16. Meanwhile, Zach Cregger is releasing his Resident Evil film starring Austin Abrams, coming to theaters on September 18.
