Hulu is developing Just One Day, a new romantic drama series starring Kathryn Newton and based on Gayle Forman’s bestselling young adult novels.
The series will draw from Forman’s Just One Day, Just One Year, and the follow-up novella, expanding the story across the three-book series. Newton is set to play Allyson Healey, a young woman whose carefully planned life is turned upside down during the final day of a three-week post-graduation trip through Europe.
Allyson has always approached life much like her suitcase: everything is neatly packed, organised and accounted for. But that changes when she meets Willem, a carefree and unpredictable travelling actor who is everything Allyson is not.
When Willem invites her to forget her carefully arranged plans and join him in Paris, Allyson makes an impulsive decision and says yes. What follows is an unforgettable 24 hours filled with romance, risk, freedom and intimacy that ultimately changes the course of her life.
The first novel, Just One Day, was published in August 2013 and told the story entirely from Allyson’s perspective. Just One Year, released in September 2014, revisited the events from Willem’s point of view, while the subsequent novella expanded the story further.
Forman’s books have been sold in 19 territories worldwide and have collectively sold nearly one million copies, giving Hulu’s adaptation an established fanbase as it brings the romantic story to the screen.
